I: Introduction to SpaTap

SpaTap is a pocket-sized, portable, eco-friendly hand washing and showering device that attaches to old or new plastic or glass bottles and then uses the bottles as a water reservoir in order to create an instant tap.

SpaTap provides a water-saving, flow controllable tap or shower anywhere.

SpaTap is constructed from food and water potable grade silicone. It can be easily installed in any situation to provide a safe way to clean hands and dispense water.

SpaTap has multiple applications and some uses could include camping, first aid, sports, schools, emergencies, disaster zones, refugee camps, and field work.

Disturbed by the statistic that diarrhoea and respiratory tract infections are the two biggest killers of children under five; SpaTap inventor, Stuart Mason, was driven to design this device to improve the health and hygiene of children without reliable water supplies, but with an abundance of bottles. SpaTap was designed as a durable, accessible solution to providing a ready-made tap in any situation.

SpaTap is designed in Australia and works with Australian companies or foundations in it’s manufacture and assembly. SpaTap has been patented, registered and trademarked.

III: SpaTap Global Objectives

SpaTap is useful in emergencies and the developing world where water is scarce and limited hygiene exists.

One of the UN Millennium Development Goals to 2015 is to reduce deaths of children under 5 caused by Diarroahea .

• Diarrhoeal disease is currently the most common illness in the world.

• Globally, there are about two billion cases of diarrhoeal disease every year.

• Diarrhoeal disease kills 1.5 million children every year.

• Diarrhoea is a leading cause of malnutrition and the second most common cause of death in children under five years old.

• Diarrhoea kills more children than malaria, measles, and AIDS combined.

• Year round transmission of diarrhoeal diseases is documented in regions of Indonesia, Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, China, Congo, Pakistan, Nigeria & India.

• More than 80% of these deaths occur in Africa and South East Asia.

Recent research by the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) identified that a fundamental obstacle to hand washing is not a lack of awareness, but a lack of purpose-built, affordable, and aspirational hand-washing hardware.

The global charity, Water Aid ( states, “The simple act of washing hands with soap and water can reduce diarrhoeal diseases by a third.”

There are current inefficient makeshift solutions; washing hands in buckets of shared water (unhygienic), tipping water out of buckets, (inefficient water use, allows contamination, no soap caddy).

The SpaTap overcomes these issues by providing hand washing while reducing water waste due to a rationed and controllable water flow. It limits contamination as the bottles are closed and secure with a built-in soap caddy on the base of the inverted bottle. Families and schools can take ownership of their own tap and become responsible for its cleanliness, location, water level and temperature. Most of all, it makes hand washing fun!

SpaTap has been designed with Ecoefficiency, Energy Efficiency, and Eco-Design concepts built into the product:

• Requires no external power source or pumps to operate = gravity fed with no energetic impulse.

• Provides minimum 25 hand washes per litre of water = saving significant water resources. ** see below

• SpaTap’s egg shape shower head creates vortex energy pressure flow = wide water spray circumference with linear flow

• Design influenced by Viktor Schauberger fluid dynamic concepts and based on the age old Amphora egg shape

• Upcycles ubiquitous plastic bottles = re-purposing the bottles (plastic or glass), giving them longevity and purpose.

• Designed to fit the most commonly sized water bottles & canteens in the word today

• Soap caddy = practical innovation utilizing the base of the inverted bottle

Customised Branding Options

The small size of the product makes it easy to brand and package.

SpaTap is a perfect item for giveaways, promotions and corporate sponsoring.

Making the SpaTap appealing for sustainability initiatives and donations.

There are multiple potential markets for the SpaTap with the main ones being NGOs and local Government Agencies in the developing world and the other being the outdoors, camping, sports & recreation markets.

We are in the early stages of approaching NGOs and Development Agencies to partner in globally distributing SpaTap to countries with water and sanitation issues. Initial discussions with World Vision WASH (Water & Sanitary Health) Specialists have been extremely positive and had one of their team members stating: “We are desperate for this kind of product.”

We are selling SpaTap through We anticipate partnering with large corporates and charity aggregators such as B1G1 (Buy One, Give One) as part of their corporate sustainability programs.

SpaTap’s global appeal and applications

• Personal: home, camping, gardening, surfing

• Family: schools, outdoor events, first aid, festivals

• Community: sporting teams, surf life saving, Ambulance service

• National: remote desert communities, emergency services

• Global: countries with sanitation & water issues, disaster & emergency zones

Community Engagement & Alliances

There are options for local production of the strap, which creates local employment opportunities, appealing enormously to NGOs.

- What is the cost of the product?

The SpaTap can be supplied in two ways with different costings; only indicative prices are quoted and all prices are FOB and ex works.

Assuming a MOQ of 1000 the SpaTap can be supplied Greater Volumes that can reduce the cost price.

1) SpaTap with Strap – Please PM me for Costings

2) SpaTap unit NO strap Please PM me for Costings

The SpaTap with NO strap is cheaper to supply. Ultimately the SpaTap water dispensing system is the technology and the strap can be made anywhere and it will significantly reduce costs by supplying SpaTap with NO strap.

SpaTap users can make their own straps from materials they have to hand. SpaTap was designed so this could be possible, however, instructions on the best way to hang with a cord will be supplied for demonstrative purposes along with pictographic instructions for use, operation and the benefits of using the hygiene system. The NO STRAP option keeps the cost down. For example in an emergency SpaTap can be hung with cord, shoe lace, string, wire, dental floss, plastic bags, etc.

Also SpaTap can be operated by being hand.

Another option is micro merchanting, where SpaTap straps can be made commercially by the community and customised using traditional African handcraft techniques. For example SpaTap could be made using coloured cords and beads with pockets and holders for soap and toothbrushes and toothpaste. This would give more ownership of the SpaTap as it would be part made with African design knowledge and beauty.

African designed straps could also offer the opportunity for commercial activities within Africa for entrepreneurs selling the SpaTap with African made Strap to local consumers thus encouraging both commerce and hygiene. This community involvement and potential job creation can stimulate community income and add value to the supply chain element and aid the spread and word-of-mouth use of SpaTap in a manner not dissimilar from network marketing.

There is also potential for export of African made straps made with wonderful colours and beads to European and Developed world markets which could lead to exports that satisfy our B1G1 goals (BUY ONE GIVE ONE)

SpaTap has already been approached by a Kenyan Non profit organisation which supplies hand washing stations to schools in Kenya with the aim to supply every child with their own tap. Children would be encouraged to create their own strap with the best designs winning SpaTaps for their schools. Every school will win.

(“MAJI na USAFI KWAAFYA BORA”Project).Meaning clean water sanitation hygiene for better health

What is SpaTap production capacity?

SpaTap can be produced to order and we can supply 20,000 per month.

However capacity can be increased with the purchase of another tool and the manufacture of this new tool has already been costed and is ready to go into manufacture. Within 3 months we could be producing 60,000 units per month. A new tool could further reduce costs per unit. For indicative pricing please contact me direct.

Are pamphlets distributed with this product? (E.g. to instruct on its use and emphasise the necessity of its use.)

Instructions for use are embossed on the side of the SpaTap, please click here

Also simple instruction pamphlets with pictograms are supplied with every SpaTap unit. They are inserted inside of the SpaTap so they can be found easily upon receipt. Once one SpaTap has been used successfully the word of mouth and ease of use protocol are initiated.

How does this product provide better access to hygiene (and other benefits) than simply pouring the water out of the bottle directly to wash ones hands?

Please check this link for an in-depth analysis

• Feasibility: Is this idea technically feasible within a one-year time frame?

The SpaTap is already in production, the supply chain is established and units are currently being distributed in UK, US, Canada, Korea, UAE, the Caribbean, Japan, NZ, Russia, Ireland, Spain, Germany and Kenya. We are confident that the demand can be met within a one year time frame.

• Scalability: How easily could this idea be scaled to reach more people?

The SpaTap could be scaled to reach more people by creating a new mold with more cavities.

The technical expertise to do this already exists, and SpaTap is already being sold in the market place as an effective hygiene solution and cleaning device.

• Impact: How many people will this solution impact?

Every SpaTap in the hands of an individual adult or child gives ownership and will positively impact that person. A SpaTap for every family member gives access to water wherever it is needed most, for example, outside the toilet or inside the kitchen. We initially aim to reach up to 100,000,000 people.

In time, this solution will impact the health and hygiene of entire populations.

• Cost/Value: Is the idea low in cost relative to the impact it will make?

Yes indicative pricing of the SpaTap without a strap could be as low as $5.50 per unit depending on volume. However scaling the manufacture of this product and streamling shipping and distribution options could make further substantial savings and thus bring the cost to the end user even lower. Our goal is to make the SpaTap as affordable and competitive in the market place as possible. It is our aim for everyone to own their own SpaTap.

• Overall innovativeness: Does this idea exist or is it a completely new innovation?

The closest product on the market is the solar shower bag used for camping. This product is heavy, can be difficult to use and does not save water. It is not a child friendly product, and it is also easily broken if dropped and crucially, it is not safe to drink from. For this reason we are confident that SpaTap is unique in the marketplace. The design is patented and trademarked.

SpaTap is durable and strong and will last a lifetime if cared for. A strength test has proven that a van can drive over SpaTap and SpaTap is left unscathed and ready to dispense water. You must see it to believe it.
