Seawater desalination

Desalination refers to several processes that remove some amount of salt and other minerals from saline water. Salt water is desalinated to produce fresh water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. One potential byproduct of desalination is salt. This is not a new concept and it is already being carried out in many countries around the world. South Africa has 6 desalination plants in operation. Algeria has at ...more »

Ocean Water Purification for the World

The salty sea water covers 70% of the earth’s surface. 50% of the world population stays within 100km from the ocean shores. The reverse osmosis technology and similar technologies are well developed and tested technologies to purify salty sea water into drinkable fresh water. The problem is the costly energy / electricity needs to run these plants especially for drawing water from the sea at high pressure. This cost ...more »

Desalination

Desalination is extracting the salt from seawater. Desalination is not a new idea and is already used in many regions, particularly in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia alone accounts for about a tenth of global desalination. Israel uses desalination technology to provide about a fourth of its domestic water needs. Modern desalination plants employ a method called reverse osmosis, which uses a membrane to separate the salt. ...more »
